Family Optometric Associates is locally owned and operated serving the Norfolk, Virginia area since 1992. We are located within the Norfolk Navy Exchange.

When you visit us for an eye exam, our optometrist Dr. French, Dr. Barnett, and Dr. Chado will evaluate your visual health. This includes general eye examinations for correction of farsightedness, nearsightedness, presbyopia, and astigmatism. The doctors also diagnose, manage and treat diseases and disorders of the visual system. Thorough examinations of the external and internal structure of the eyes are performed to evaluate for many ocular conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, retinal disorders, and systemic disorders including hypertension and diabetes.

Richard French, O.D.

Dr. French was born and raised in Oklahoma. He received his B.S. in Chemistry – Health Sciences from the University of Central Oklahoma and later received his Doctorate of Optometry from the Illinois College of Optometry. He is also a standing member of the Colorado Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association.

Before his time as an undergraduate, Dr. French spent over a decade in the eye care field. Where he gained extensive experience working as an optical lab technician, optician, optometric technician, and ophthalmic technician.

While attending the Illinois College of Optometry, Dr. French focused on primary care, with emphasis in refractive technique and fitting soft contact lenses; pediatrics, with emphasis in binocular vision and vision therapy; and advanced care, with emphasis in glaucoma and dry eye treatment. He was in the student division of ICO’s private practice club and frequently perform free vision screenings for various community organizations.

As hobbies, Dr. French enjoys biking, skiing, reading, and traveling.
